ELEGANT STEAM
London & North Eastern Railway
Class P1 - No 2393. Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and introduced in 1925 as a two locomotive class they could haul immense loads of 100 or more wagons, primarily coal. So much so that this caused problems of fitting such long trains into the marshaling yards as well as the ever present risk of broken wagon couplings. They were always painted in the standard (peacetime) LNER goods locomotive livery, ie, black with red lining.
