ELEGANT STEAM
London Midland & Scottish Railway
Jubilee Class No 5656 Cochrane. One of a class of 191 5XP locomotives designed by Stanier and introduced from 1934. Reputed to be poor steamers when introduced subsequent modifications resulted in an highly efficient machine capable of hauling heavy loads at express speeds - several instances were recorded at speeds in excess of 90mph. All of the class carried names varying from places in the British Empire to naval ships from Nelson's time.
The illustrations depicts No 5656 with a 4000gal tender with which these locomotives looked particularly well. A stylish and efficient locomotive that never failed to attract admiring looks (only, of course, if you're of an age to remember them in LMS red). Four of the class have, thank goodness, been preserved so even the young can see a Jubilee in LMS red.
