ELEGANT STEAM
4-6-4T - No 542. Designed by Manson and appearing in 1922 these massive tank engines, over 100 tons, looked formidable and crowds gathered to see them when they first appeared. In their GSWR livery they must have been a striking sight. The only trouble was that there was very little work for them to do, averaging barely 100 miles a day. The LMS took them on after the Grouping in 1923 and didn't really know what to do with them. They painted them in the LMS red livery though, and I shall illustrate one so painted eventually. They had all gone by 1936. I still have a 4mm model of this locomotive in LMS red that I made some time ago.
