ELEGANT STEAM
London Midland & Scottish Railway
Coronation Class - No 6222 Queen Mary. Designed by Sir William Stanier and introduced in 1937, these locomotives were part of a class of 26. Four were in the blue livery as shown while others were in LMS red with gold stripes (7 were not streamlined). Introduced in the middle of the Art Deco age when publicity departments raved about modernity, style and speed nonetheless these locomotives were fast, reliable and prodigious haulers. One of the class No 6220 Coronation held the world speed record for steam traction, fairly briefly, at 114mph. I still have a 4mm model of this locomotive that I made from brass sheet.
