ELEGANT STEAM
No 893 City of Chester. This is one of the "Experiment" class of express locomotives designed by George Whale. 105 were built between 1905-1910. According to H F F Livesey in his book "Locomotives of the LNWR" these locomotives ran poorly uphill, were sluggish on the level but could run fast downhill. So I suppose that's something.  But why build 105 of them ?

On a personal note the habit of the LNWR to classify their locomotives by the name of the first of the Class I find to be irritating. It was, however, used by other Companies. This led to an error on this page originally. Thanks to Robert Redhead for his advice.
