766 Class No 778. This class of 15 locomotives was introduced by MacIntosh in 1897. They were also known as "Dunalastair II" after the name given to the first locomotive of the class. They were reputed to be excellent engines and some lasted right through LMS days up to BR times. They were used on both express and goods rosters.
Caledonian blue shades are very elusive and the so called chocolate of the lower areas is even worse to pin down. This locomotive is in the nearest that I can get to the light blue used roughly from the beginning of the 20th Century.
I could not have attempted this illustration without the in depth and excellent information contained in Jim MacIntosh's book "Caledonian Railway Livery".
