ELEGANT STEAM
British Railways 1948 - 1965
Ex LMS Pacific No 46228 Duchess of Rutland. Designed by Sir William Stanier and introduced in 1937 with the blue streamliners these powerful locomotives continued to be built (in non streamlined form) right through to BR days. 46228 is shown as at around 1958 when, although the BR livery was basically GWR green, a number of these "Duchess" class locomotives were turned out in the pre war LMS livery and very nicely they wore it too. Arguably the most powerful express passenger locomotives in the UK they possessed the "Stanier" style that made them ( and still does make them) have iconic status.
